When Lucas the Spider first made his debut on YouTube in November, the internet pretty much exploded. Even people with severe arachnophobia could not resist this little spider’s adorable mannerisms, his big eyes, or his cute voice (not to mention those cute little spide paws!).

Lucas the Spider is the amazing work of animator Joshua Slice, who decided to put this short animation together with the help of his young nephew Lucas, who did the voice acting for the animation. It resulted in the perfect match for Slice’s animation style, and now people cannot get enough of Lucas!

Slice explained:

“This is an animation test of a character I’ve been working on. I’m responsible for the design, modeling, rigging, animation, lighting, and rendering.”

Here’s the first animation Slice ever did of Lucas the Spider, and it’s easy to see why this has gotten so much attention:

Due to all of the love and attention Lucas has gained, Slice is continuing this series, and has made several more videos. You can watch them all below:

The animation is just unreal!

The reason this is so special and amazing is not only because of the unbelievable detail and effort that Slice put into this. Videos like this are exactly what the tarantula keeping and spider hobby need – videos that show that spiders are not the scary creatures that the world has made them out to be.

In my time advocating for the fair treatment of arachnids, I have noticed that much arachnophobia comes from inaccurate information and fear mongering. I get messages all the time from people who are desperate to cure their arachnophobia, and looking at things like Lucas can be the perfect remedy. Exposure is powerful, especially when it’s fun.

We’re SO glad that Lucas is getting tons of attention, because people will finally stop believing that spiders are ugly and scary! Way to go, Lucas!
